SBHC Maintains The Arizona Trail

Lori Anderson | Published on 4/14/2024

On February 21, ten members of the SaddleBrooke Hiking Club (SBHC), led by Ray Peale (SBHC) and Chrissy Fitcher (Arizona Trail Association - ATA), conducted maintenance of a section of the Arizona National Scenic Trail, Oracle Passage #13, for which Ray is the Steward. We were happy to welcome back Seana Kobak, Ray’s long-time co-chair.

Our work targeted the trail east and west of South Mount Lemmon Road, in the general area of American Flag Ranch.  This section of trail was found to be in generally good condition - thanks to regular maintenance efforts.

However, rainy times and continued vegetation growth means that the work is never quite finished. The aptly named catclaw needed cutting back, and drainage improvements were necessary.

The ATA provided hard hats, gloves, and tools. Following a safety briefing, part of the group worked with Ray to improve drainage along the trail to reduce erosion.   The rest of the group spread out along the trail to tackle the vegetation. Upon returning to our vehicles, we enjoyed tasty treats, soda pop, and laughter.

Trail maintenance is scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month through March. After the March event, we take a break and resume activities in October. If you are interested in joining us, please email:
