Palm Springs, California, is our next club trip. The club has not been to Palm Springs since 2015. Palm
Springs is a desert resort city located in the Coachella Valley desert region. It is surrounded by four mountain ranges offering innumerable hiking opportunities as well as a vibrant arts and cultural scene, hot springs, and other recreational opportunities. You may expect a six-hour drive (give or take) with daytime temperatures in the low 70’s and nighttime temperatures in the high 40’s.
The trip committee has been hard at work setting up the spring trip to Palm Springs, California. The individuals directly responsible for the planning are:
Trip Leader: Arlene Daigle
Hiking Leader: Jim Solon
Registrar: Ken Wong
Lodging: Barbara Rutt
Group meal in Palm Springs: Maria Spencer
Pre trip potluck: Leslie Hawkins
We value the input of our other trip committee members: Tim Butler, Ruth Caldwell, Heather Davis, Marc Humphrey, Terry Hughes, Dale Leman, Ruth Leman, and Rob Simms.
Hiking Opportunities
Jim Solon, our hiking trip leader, will be working closely with the guides to determine an interesting, varied list of hiking options for our club members. It is a “work in process” currently. Much more to follow in the coming months. Some of the areas being considered are:
Sand to Snow National Monument
Mount San Jacinto State Park
Santa Rosa and San Jacinto National Monument
Cahuila Native American Land, Hidden Canyons
Aqua Caliente of Cahuila Indian Reservation, Indian Canyons
Joshua Tree National Park
Mecca Hills Wilderness
Registration
In the past, we have had people register for the trips who MAY decide to go on the trip. We are requesting that you not sign up for the trip unless you intend to go on the trip. Life happens, and there is a myriad of reasons for cancelling; but the trip committee requests that you not sign up unless you intend to go and then cancel if necessary.
Registration for the trip will be done online in ClubExpress starting September 1. Please secure your lodging accommodation before you register for the trip.
- Go to the Hikes Calendar, month of February 2025, where you will see the trip posted.
- Click on the event to start the registration process, and on the right side of the screen click on “register now”.
- You will be required to answer three questions to complete your registration.Questions cover your lodging, your cell phone number while on the trip, and names(s) of anyone accompanying you.
- Contact Ken Wong at kmwong@q.com if you have any questions regarding registrations.
- Registrations will be capped at 80 persons with a wait list of 20 persons at this time.
Lodging
February 24-28 is “high season” in Palm Springs. Despite looking at many options we were unable to secure a block of rooms to use as a home base. The criteria used was convenient location, adequate parking, breakfast included, and free Wi-Fi.
Barbara identified possible options for you to choose from that are central to downtown and our hiking destinations. You may, of course, research other options online.
