Cochise Stronghold (East) / Amerind Foundation Museum. Rating: C. Pace: Moderate [159, 08:00 AM, $22]. This is a beautiful hike through the Dragoon Mountains to a saddle that provided a hiding place for Cochise during the apache wars. Cochise is buried in a hidden location in the area. The area contains several beautiful rock formations and pinnacles. The trail begins and returns to the Cochise Stronghold Campground off Hwy 191 east of Benson. Bring lunch, a camera, and at least one quart of water. On the way back, we will stop at the Amerind Foundation Museum (fee required), where American Indian artifacts are on display. Hike 6 miles; trailhead elevation 4500 feet; net elevation change 1298 feet; accumulated gain 1298 feet; RTD 221 miles (some dirt).
