Box Camp Trail to Fern Grotto. Rating: D***. Pace: Moderate [NEW, 07:30 AM, $16]. The hike begins at the Box Camp Trailhead near Spencer Peak on Catalina Hwy. After a short uphill climb, the hike proceeds downhill for 1.5 miles to a rest spot in a lovely area of Ponderosa pines and Bracken Ferns. From there we will return slowly uphill to the trailhead. The *** designation is due to the fact that the total ascent is greater than 500 feet for a normal D hike (actually 594 feet). Hike 3.0 miles; trailhead elevation 7920 feet; net elevation change 415 feet; accumulated gain 594 feet; RTD 123 miles.
