The Familiar and The New

On Friday, March 22, approximately 120 of the SBHC members gathered at Catalina State Park to enjoy the annual Spring Picnic.

Once again, we celebrated our hiking friendships, as well as giving special recognition to members for their contributions to the club.

Ruth Caldwell was recognized for her leadership as outgoing President of the SBHC.

Ruth Caldwell (outgoing President), Katie Atkins (retiring club Secretary) and Jeff Love (retiring Lead Guide) received certificates of appreciation for their leadership as President, Secretary, and Lead Guide.

Dave Corrigan was recognized for all his work in designing the new SBHC website.

Enrollment for this spring’s event was made much easier because of new website capabilities allowing for online registration and cancellation. The new system avoided requiring a manual tally of attendees and provided a much more accurate count for ordering club provided chicken.  We thank both Dave Corrigan and Ken Wong for their technologic expertise and creativity.

The food offerings were, as always, varied and delicious. All attendees selected fried or baked chicken supplied by the club and choices from among the large array of yummy contributions brought by fellow members. No one left hungry. Leftovers were consolidated and delivered to the Golder Ranch Fire Station on Golder Road.

During lunch, the inaugural Gear Gift and Grab tables were open for browsing and purchase. SBHC members had donated a variety of hiking clothing and gear. The sales proceeds ($5 for clothing items and $10 for gear) totaled $110 and were contributed to the SBHC treasury.  Items not purchased were either taken home by the owners or donated to The Goose.

The consensus is that the GGG be continued as an ongoing part of our SBHC picnics, and that merchandise will be limited to hiking items and not include any camping specific donations.

As is traditional, after lunch Ruth and newly elected President, Ken Wong, raffled off REI $25 gift certificates. We had ten lucky and excited winners!
