Saguaro national Park West
Santa Rita Mountains, Madera Canyon
A short, strenuous, but fun hike in the lush Madera Canyon taking in two lovely springs.
Ice Box Canyon (C, 2.5 miles, 400 feet, Ice Box Canyon TH, *RRC, (35 min drive from hotel) 16 miles = $2 DD + $5 Park Fee): The Ice Box Canyon Trailhead is located on the RRC Scenic Road about 5 miles in from its southern intersection with Blue Diamond Road (NV 159). There are restrooms at the TH. From the parking lot, the trail heads down across the wash and up the other side toward the canyon. The trail is well defined as it leads you up the side of the canyon for approximately 0.25 mile. It then drops into the bottom of the canyon. From this point the trail becomes a route over or around boulders as it continues upstream. As we near the mouth of the canyon, the canyon walls rise hundreds of feet into the air, and the sound of rushing water (given sufficient rain/snowmelt) fills the air. The official trail ends at the large ponderosa pine tree in the bottom of the canyon . Return via the same route. Hiking las vegas estimates the hiking time as 2 to 3 hours.
